Ancient Agora Wheelchair Access

This ramp leads from the entrance down into the Agora. Ancient Agora wheelchair access is possible via the north entrance on Adrianou street. There is flat access at the entrance followed by a 15 m long ramp going down into the Agora (3 star flatness). The ancient street known as the Panathenaic Way is at the bottom of the ramp and is covered by firm gravel (4 star firmness).

There are several steps at the entrance to the museum.

On your left you will see the a replica of the Stoa of Attalus which houses a museum containing many artifacts excavated from the Ancient Agora. Wheelchair access to the museum is provided by a ramp. There is a wheelchair accessible restroom at the museum.

If you turn left you can get to this ramp to get into the museum.

Throughout the Ancient Agora you will find many remains of columns and statues to view. There is some uneven terrain throughout the Ancient Agora but a wheelchair user can still access about 30% of it. Because there are few obstructions you will actually be able to view about 70% of it.

On the western end of the Ancient Agora is the Temple of Hephaestus and Athena, better known as the Theseum. It looks just like the Parthenon but is slightly smaller. If you approach it from the Ancient Agora, wheelchair access is not possible because there is a hill and steps to reach it. I didn’t realize it when I visited it, but I believe there is a flatter approach (possibly wheelchair accessible) from the northwest or southwest. Another picture of the ramp.

The Ancient Agora was one of my favorite places in Athens. It is much less crowded than the Acropolis and there are many more artifacts to see!

Is there a wheelchair accessible entrance? Yes, the main entrance is on the north side of Adrianou street and provides handicapped access. There is a 15 m long ramp going down to the Agora (3 star flatness).

Is the door push/pull, revolving, automated by a button, or motion activated? The Agora is outside so there is no door. Most of the Agora is covered with 4 star firm gravel.

Where is the closest place that cars/taxis can drop-off people? At the entrance on Adrianou street.

What are the nearby subway/metro stations? Monastiraki station is about 300 m away from the entrance. The path from the metro station to the Agora entrance is flat.

What bus lines pass nearby? Bus numbers 25, 26, 27, 35, and 400 A few places in the Ancient Agora have ramps like this to get over artifacts.

Where is the closest disabled parking? Book an accessible hotel room here and I’ll find out for you

Are there cobblestones or hills leading to the entrance? The area outside the entrance is flat with some mild cobblestones.

What percentage of the attraction can be viewed without having to go up steps? Can access 30% but see 70%. The flattest approach to the Temple of Hephaestus is from the northwest or southwest.

Which parts are not accessible? There is uneven ground through most parts of the Ancient Agora. Much of the path is fairly firm gravel (4 star firmness). The Temple of Hephaestus has steps to approach it from the east, but there might be a more accessible path to it from the northwest or southwest.
