Accessible Vacations in Florence - March 2012 Newsletter
Last month, I shared the wonders of Rome. I mentioned how accessible it was to other urban destinations in Italy, such as Florence and how disabled travelers can easily connect between them.
Florence and the surrounding Tuscan region is one of my favorite places in Rome. Here are a few reasons why:
- Less hills than Rome, this is a great benefit for travelers requiring accessibility
- Accessible accommodation is cheaper when compared to other Italian cities and there are several from which to select
- Florence hosts a lot of exciting things to see that are cost free for disabled tourists, such as Uffizi Gallery and Academia.
- Easy outdoor accessible shopping in large, open areas
Accessible Florence Travel Tips
Once you decide to make Florence part of your itinerary, here are a few Florence accessible travel tips:
- There are no buses in center of city and buses that are available are limited in terms of accessibility.
- There is no large, central square with outdoor accessible eating, like Rome’s Campo de Fiori. There are still accessible places to grab great meals, but they will be found in various points throughout the city.
- Some attractions are very busy and require reservations in advance to avoid a long wait in lines which can remove spontaneity in your travels. Plan ahead.
- Like many other European cities, Florence is filled with streets constructed of cobblestones and uneven pavement.
