Best of Bruges Accessible Group Walking Tour
This 2 hour accessible group walking/rolling tour of Bruges includes the best highlights of the city such as Old St. John’s Hospital and the Church of Our Lady.
Your guide will meet you in front of the Concertgebouw in ‘t Zand Square where your Bruges accessible tour begins. You will walk/roll through the quaint streets of Bruges as your guide tells you about the city’s unique history and many well-preserved medieval buildings. One of the first of these that you will encounter along the way is Old St. John’s Hospital, an 11th century hospital building that is one of the oldest hospitals that still exists in Europe! Learn about some of the strange and sometimes terrifying medical practices that were commonplace before doctors had accurate knowledge of human anatomy and diseases.
Right next door is the Church of Our Lady, which dates from the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries. The tower is nearly 123 meters high, and is the highest structure in the city of Bruges. Your tour does not include an inside visit of the church, but your guide will tell you about the most celebrated sculpture in Bruges that was donated to the church in 1514, Michelangelo’s Madonna. It is definitely worth going back to see after the tour!
You will also walk by the Sint-Salvator Cathedral, the official cathedral of Bruges, on your way to the Begijnhof. Although this cathedral has undergone several renovations, it has remarkably withstood the tests of time and the oldest surviving section of the church dates back to the 12th century!
You will then reach the Begijnhof, a beautiful medieval walled area that was once home to the Beguines. You will learn about these ladies who lived here under the protection of the city. The Begijnhof is also one of the quietest and most peaceful places in Bruges!
Your Best of Bruges Accessible Group Walking Tour will then lead you to the heart of the city, to Burg Square and Markt Square, where you will see the impressive City Hall building, the Belfry, and the Statue of Jan Breydel and Peter Coninck, heroes of Bruges’ independence.
First time visitors to Bruges will enjoy this tour because it gives an excellent overview of the highlights of Bruges!
* IMPORTANT NOTE: If you might have any problems keeping up with the group while walking/rolling over cobblestones, you should book the private accessible Bruges tour instead.
