Wheelchair Access at Venice Marco Polo Airport
Wheelchair Access at Venice’s Marco Polo Airport is quite good, and there are multiple accessible options to get to Venice. Wheelchair users and other disabled visitors will have no problems with accessibility in the airport.
To get from the accessible Venice airport into the city, the easiest (and most scenic) route is to book a private wheelchair accessible water taxi in advance. Other options include taking the Alilaguna water bus then switching to another Vaporetto boat, or taking a bus/taxi to the island then taking a Vaporetto boat.
If you are traveling to multiple cities in Italy (such as Rome, Florence, and Venice), I would recommend doing Venice last. If you start in Venice, you might be tired of art and churches by the time you reach Rome!
I gave Venice Marco Polo Airport wheelchair access a 4 star Sage Accessibility Rating because it has elevators and step-free routes. I did not give it a higher rating because you need to walk/roll 500 meters to reach the accessible boat dock.
Location of Venice’s wheelchair accessible Marco Polo airport
When your plane arrives at the accessible Venice Marco Polo airport, you will either use a jetway (shown in the photo on the left) or staircase (shown in the photo on the right).
The Venice Marco Polo airport is not very big. When we visited, we were able to get to baggage claim within 20 minutes of the time we landed. From there, we waited for our bags for 10 minutes, then spent 10 minutes walking/rolling to the wheelchair accessible water taxi that we had booked.
After you collect your bags at the baggage claim, proceed out the exit. When you see the crowd of people waiting for arriving passengers, go straight past them through the doors to go outside.
Option 1: By water taxi
The easiest way to go from the accessible Venice Marco Polo Airport directly to your accessible Venice hotel is to take a wheelchair accessible water taxi. It’s also a breathtaking way to approach the magnificent city of Venice!
Book your accessible Venice water taxi
To reach the water taxi dock, you need to walk/roll 500 meters (about 8 minutes). The route from the airport to the dock is shown below. If you speak with your airline, they may be able to arrange transportation to the dock.
Wheelchair accessible route from Marco Polo airport to vaporetto dock (500 meters):
When you exit the small airport, turn left and proceed under the covered walkway. You will be sure you’re in Italy when you see a sign complaining about red tape preventing the installation of a monorail!
Follow the signs to the water taxi dock.
The accessible dock for the accessible water taxis is on the far right. It is shown in the photo on the left. A photo showing departure from accessible water taxi dock is on the right.

The accessible Venice water taxis have mechanical lifts to get disabled passenger on and off the boat.
Your route into Venice will be along designated waterways marked by pylons on either side of the channel. You will need to reserve wheelchair accessible Venice water taxi in advance.
Option 2: By Bus followed by Vaporetto
Another option is to take the accessible #5 bus to Piazzale Roma then take a vaporetto. This option assumes that
1) your Venice hotel has a bridge-free route between a vaporetto dock and the hotel entrance, and
2) you can handle the one large step on Venice vaporetto that is sometimes present
When you exit the airport, the ACTV bus #5 will be on your left and ATVO bus will be on your right.
The photos below show the accessible bus #5 which goes to Piazzale Roma. It leaves every 30 minutes From there, you would need to take a vaporetto boat down the Grand Canal to your hotel
The ACTV bus has multiple steps to get into it.
Option 3: By Alilaguna Boat
The Alilaguna boats leave from the dock near the water taxis. Many (and maybe all) of the boats from the airport are not wheelchair accessible (photo of non-wheelchair accessible Alilaguna boat shown below).
